The ATE (Association of Teacher Educators) Distinguished Program in Teacher Education was presented to the College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University at the national conference this spring.  The award recognized WCU and their school partners who made this national recognition possible.

 

Dr. A. Michael Dougherty, Dean of the College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University, will present a plaque to Transylvania County Schools in recognition of the school system’s partnership with WCU and its contribution to teacher education.

Mr. Josh Freeman, Brevard City Planner, will discuss the new Safe Routes to Schools Program that is currently under development by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  The program was created to 1) enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school; 2) make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby promoting healthy and active lifestyles; and 3) facilitate projects and activities designed to improve safety, reduce traffic, lower fuel consumption, and reduce air pollution. 

 

An outline of the Safe Routes to Schools Program is attached.

At the June 5 meeting, Dr. Truman Atkins, President of the Southern Division of Energy Education, Inc., presented a proposal to reduce energy costs for the Transylvania County Schools, projecting net savings of more than $1,266,000 over the next seven years as a result of implementing his company’s program.

The Interim Budget Resolution for the 2006-2007 school year is attached.  The resolution will allow the school system to pay salaries and normal operating expenses until the adoption of the Final Budget Resolution for 2006-2007.

Extreme Makeover Winner

Sarah Justice, media specialist at RHS/RMS, entered an Extreme Makeover contest and won 25 new 17” LCD monitors for her school.  The contest was open to K-12 and higher education customers.  Sarah and her students created a seven-minute video as their entry.  Donys Merrill would like to share that video with the Board.

Policy CBBC (Evaluation of the Superintendent) outlines the timeline and process for the annual evaluation of the superintendent by the Board of Education.  The schedule for the 2005-2006 evaluation is listed below:

Superintendent provides self-evaluation to the Board.  Board members get individual evaluation forms to complete.

Prior to July 17

Board members return evaluation forms to chair or vice-chair.

July 17 (closed session)

Board chair and vice-chair meet with superintendent to discuss self-evaluation.

Board members reach consensus on evaluation.

August 21
