Mary Arnaudin with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service will give an update on the high school “Time Project.”  The Time Project is being funded by a three-year $60,000 (per year) grant from Burroughs Wellcome for science education.  The name comes from “time to do real science.”  Students from BHS, RHS, and DRS are developing their own research projects focusing on the scientific inquiry method.  To date, twenty students and five teacher mentors are participating in the Time Project.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association requires local boards to grant permission to employ non-faculty individuals as head coaches of varsity or junior varsity teams.  As a general practice, the Transylvania County Board of Education approves all volunteer and contract coaches for Transylvania County Schools.  John Tinsley will request approval of four new coaches (highlighted) for 2007-2008 fall sports.  Additional names may be presented at future meetings.

Attached for your review is the Davidson River School ABC’s Incentive Pay Plan for 2007-2008.  Alternative school plans must be approved by their local Board.  The North Carolina ABC’s model for alternative schools mandates two achievement-based components and three local options.  At least one of the local options must be an academic measure of student achievement.  Bo Williams and Donna Hill will answer any questions you may have.  Approval of the plan will be requested at the next regular meeting.
